What is Adventure Racing

A race that will push you mentally and physically

Entrants must work together as a team.  Entrants must be within approximately 100 feet (or talking distance) of each team member.

It’s a secret!  Race Map will be given out just prior to start of race.  You may see other Metzger friends, family members or sponsor’s teams in the race.  However, only Micah & Matt Metzger are privy to the race plans including the exact starting and ending location, route and checkpoints.

TA’s are Transition Areas.  Each Transition Area (TA) is where entrants transition from one portion of the race to another, such as from biking to hiking.

CP’s are Checkpoints.  Maps will lead you to Checkpoints (CP’s).  Each team must find a minimum number of CP’s to complete the race within the allotted time limit.

Time management is key.  Teams must complete the race in the allotted time, and find the minimum number of CP’s.  If they do not, they will receive a “DNF” which simply stands for “did not finish”.

Safety is important.  Please follow all safety regulations and follow the “good Samaritan” policy.  If a person is hurt or in any danger, you need to stop and help them

Teams are self-supported.  This means that each team will carry all of their own gear throughout the race (see “Required Gear”)

This race is a “Sprint”.  Our race will have a 4 & 8 hour limit. We expect new and experienced racers and have designed the race to accommodate both

REQUIRED GEAR (See “Required Gear List” for in-depth information)

Teams must carry all required gear throughout each leg of the race.  Gear checks may be performed on the race course.  Each member must wear a Race Number at all times.  Biking Helmets must be worn during all biking.  All team members must properly wear a Coast Guard Approved Type III Personal Flotation Device (life jackets)at all times when on water (please bring your own).

REQUIRED GEAR LIST * be sent via e-mail to all entrants

The goal is to find as many CP’s as possible in the allotted time.   We also want people to have fun, bond with their team and enjoy the outdoors.

Navigation is up to you.  Each team will have some freedom in deciding how to get to each CP using their map and compass.  Teams will need to work together to decide on the best route to take. Stay on public property (NO TRESPASSING on personal property)

Adventure racing is challenging, but incredibly rewarding.  Racers will be challenged to do their personal best.  Everyone from beginners to advanced athletes will have fun at our race.

There are some freebies!  Everyone likes free stuff.  We will try to get some freebies from sponsors to give everyone.

It’s a competition, but…..it’s for charity.  Competitive people will love this race because we will keep track of times, and there will be trophies.  But it is also a charitable and fun event.

Orientation Day.  There will be at least one “Orientation Day” where new racers are invited to learn about orienteering, paddling, etc. so they will be comfortable on the day of the race.

RULES: * Amendments will be sent in e-mails to registered racers

 Automatic reasons for disqualification:

·         Leaving teammate behind (each member must be within speaking distance of approx. 100 feet)

·         Mode of travel not specified for each segment of race (ex: no riding bike on the hiking segment)

·         Use of any electric navigation devices (no iPhones, smart phones or GPS units)

·         Littering

·         Non-assistance to person in danger

On the race course:

Each team will visit a series of checkpoints (CP’s) that are described on the Clue Sheet.  You must visit the minimum number of checkpoints and using the mode of transportation described.  The team that visits the most checkpoints in the least amount of time (within the time limit) will be the winner.

Each team will receive a control card (aka: Passport).  You will punch the card at each checkpoint starting at the first square until you have visited all the checkpoints.

There will be no time penalty for missing the optional checkpoints.  Teams that find all checkpoints will be ranked higher than teams that miss a checkpoint or checkpoints.

All original members of each team must check in together at each checkpoint.  All members must remain within 100 feet of each other at all times during the event.  All team members must cross the finish line at the same time.  If a team member must withdraw, upon Race Official’s approval, they must do so at a Transition Area if possible.

No littering.  Racers and spectators are asked to adhere to a “Leave no trace” ethic.

Teams must follow race instructions and avoid off-limits areas.

Teams must travel under their own power during the race.  Any team using motorized transportation will be disqualified.

 In Transition Areas:

Team members will not be allowed to receive support in the transition areas by anyone not racing.  Non-team members are not allowed on the course without approval of Race Directors
